The Green Ribbons School Program is a school waste diversion and green jobs program for our communities. While Oahu faces the challenge of what to do with all of the trash produced on a daily basis, The Green House has developed a program that converts schools into zero waste sites where "waste" is kept on-site and composted into useable resources. Trained Environmental Educators at each site ensures the sustainability of the program and provides mentor/mentee green jobs training opportunities.
“Show Me the Power” (SMTP) utilizes awareness of energy use to provoke action. This project is part-gaming app, part-real-time energy monitoring. The SMTP app enables users to see the resultant energy and cost savings from hypothetical appliance upgrades and changes in energy habits. “The Island Pulse” consists of a public network of photo-frame-sized kiosks sited in high-traffic locations that will display regularly updated island energy consumption data.
The Hawai'i Policy Portal (HPP) makes it easy for residents statewide to actively follow and participate in Hawai'i's legislative process. Through a single web platform, HPP simplifies the research, mobilization, and communication needed for effective advocacy at both the State and County levels. When introduced through existing networks of civic organizations, HPP has the potential to transform public participation in Hawai'i's policy-making process.
Move With Balance is a 6-year-old award-winning program for seniors focused on innovative exercises that prevent falls and enhance cognitive skills. Seniors (age 65+) now constitute 13% of the US population; soon that figure will be 19%. Our MWB replication has 3 models so “no senior will be left behind.” The replication package contains a manual, 2 DVDs, and all supplies needed to implement the program. A user-friendly interactive website connects clients for sharing and further trainings
Public accessiblity to the mountains and oceans in Hawaii, for subsistence, recreation, or even transportation, is becoming more and more diffcult as we continue to loose ancient and historic trail access to development, landowner concerns and other barriers. Our project seeks to deploy an innovative solution to maintain, and in some cases newly establish, public access to trails and pathways on Hawaii Island as a model for other communities through out the state of Hawaii.
